In my early days in crypto I played with Dogecoin. There are 2 great things about Dogecoin: it is very similar to Bitcoin and it's extremely cheap.
The @OP talking the total amount of the investment, not the price of coins/token.
I believe the first 1-3 step already mention with @OP, still pretty basic for me and according to my experience 70-80% all beginners know about this went they started to find a topic about bitcoin/cryptocurrency.
The problem, a lot of people thinking involving to bitcoin/cryptocurrency they can get rich in a short time. Because of that, they always falling into ponzi project, the ponzi project also really smarted focusing attract new user who has age around 50-70 old people went they have less ability about technology. The other steep already mentions from @OP, I believe it's still pretty hard for new corners.
