You are right Cricket is like a religion in India and IPL their T20 league which is among the Top 6 leagues in the world. Mzhansi Superleague of South Africa and Big Bash League of Australia all got inspired by the IPL. BCCI the Indian cricket board is the richest cricket board in the world even than the ICC which is the International Cricket Council similar to FIFA in football. The major cricket playing and following nations are South Asian countries apart from it Australia, England and New Zealand.
