Moving BTC to a 5 minute blockspeed would literally double it's transaction capacity.
orphaning rates aside, this is contentious for another reason: it speeds up the emission rate by a factor of 2. those aren't the monetary properties that bitcoiners signed up for.
it would also only represent a small, linear increase in throughput capacity. what we need are mechanisms that can provide
exponential increases. LN is one such mechanism.
Alternatively you could reduce block reward 50% to keep emission rate. But both changing block time interval or block reward require hard-fork, which won't be approved, especially because Bitcoin community prioritize backward compatibility.
A 5 minute Blockspeed would not affect the orphan rate enough to even notice,
you have to drop down to less than 1 minute blockspeed before you notice high orphan rate numbers.
Internet is alot faster than it was in 2009.
A Full Doubling of Capacity would help out the miners alot as they need to earn more in transaction fees with each halving to offset the loss in rewards, it is how Satoshi designed Bitcoin's economics. LN
disrupts Satoshi economic design by granting fees to 3rd parties that do nothing to continue the onchain mining. If the Bitcoin Miners can't profit , then their is no bitcoin, which is what creates the possibility then miners trash the segwit/bitcoin network for BCH or BSV networks so they can stay in business using the transaction fees as Satoshi Envisioned.
As mentioned by ETFbitcoin, all that is needed is a code change to correct the rewards for the increased # of blocks.
Halving is the perfect time to do it. If the bitcoin community were not scared of Hard forks, we can thank GMAX for creating another myth that people continue to regurgitate without thinking about it first.
* No one in the altcoin community is afraid of hard forks. ** Note : Every Fork Executed by Satoshi was a Hard Fork. *
What some people forget is LN is an 3rd party Offchain solution, if Onchain Bitcoin fails so too will LN Bitcoin Promissory Notes.
