If someone is already addicted it is difficult for the individual to make a stop in that person's addiction, the same thing for the heavy gambler.
Heavy gambler and an addicted gambler are somewhat the same since they are both addicted into it and stopping gambling for them are really hard and there are many things that you need like family help, experts in mental things, discipline etc.

There are many ways to recover from being addicted to gambling and most of them are already stated here. Now the problem is not all of the gamblers can do it for some reasons. Yes we can say that our family will be a big help in recovering but what if we don't have any family members near then it will be hard for the gambler.
As @YOSHIE said, if you can stop doing things that you are already addicted with like liquor or cigarette addiction then it will be easy for them to stop gambling. In the end, it will be go down to how discipline you are and how strong your willpower is. If you really want to stop then you will do everything to stop and vice versa.
