This is completely usual in open source. Many times, the reason is simply that people give up, or don't have enough commitment to one project and let it linger. There were also zillions of "user friendly alternative bitcoin UIs" that popped up around when I started coding om bitcoin-qt. Most of those have been abandoned a long time ago.
