its better to use hardware wallets than other wallets such as online wallets, but that doesn't mean you must not use online wallets, the best way you can do with your wallet is to be careful  with the passcode or the privatekey do not let anyone know your privatekey, that might be the cause of your loss, and second don't click any suspicious links
When you have a huge amount of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, you should be storing the 90% of your crypto in your hardware wallet like ledger and trezor wallet because it is the safest way to store your cryptos that hackers could not access in a hardware wallet. While the 10% of your crypto should be in your online wallet, so it wouldn't be bad if you have been hacked or lost your account.
