it is wrong to say that when BTC is going up then ETH and alts will go up too. i think the right idea is when the total market cap of cryptocurrencies is up then there is a certain coin to go up. there is a time when btc is sideaways but ETH and alts are up. 
Sometmes it will not follow the bitcoin when ethereum has no strong fundamental but again there are so many factors that can affect it. Ethereum 2.0 has already affected the price of ethereum so much.
Rather than putting Mcap as the main point and it's better to replace it with bitcoin as the main point that can make the whole of cryptos were going up too.
