Donating is one option to get the coin listed on more exchanges, it has never been the primary option. We have always preferred exchanges that don't have listing fee and minimum trading requirements.
From start we have tried to get listed on TradeOgre, but as far as I know, they don't want to be the first exchange for any coin as they want to see first, if there is enough trading volume on some other exchange. I see this as a good sign, as it will avoid cases like Crex24 has with coins that no-one wants to buy.
