Politics is now more spectacle than substance. Voters, disillusioned with decades of growing inequality and effectively unrepresented, will now support any outsider who rails against the system, regardless of aptitude, intellect or indeed policy. The only qualification now required to lead is to be a populist demagogue. The more of an outsider you are - or can cast yourself as - the better your chances.
Regardless of whether in this instance it is simple publicity-seeking with no intention to actually run, it's likely he would have a decent chance of getting the job.
