With some cities in some countries showing massive or record spikes in COVID-19 cases, it means some sporting events might be pushed back further and might not resume for some more weeks or time.

Maybe depending on the law of a certain country, like in the USA, they still have a big spike of COVID-19 cases but I haven't heard that the NBA will be postponed, it is still scheduled to resume this July 30, 2020.
You are right, policies in each country are different...
I'm sure the sporting events will continue and the whole country in the world will definitely start over again, but what they will not start is accepting the audience, as long as the vaccine has not been found, I am sure the audience will not be allowed to be present at every sporting event.
In America and on different other countries the same practice is being continued. The games are conducted without reschedule, but none were allowed to watch it live. Recently football league took place in the similar manner without a single audience.

In terms of number almost 80% of the games were rescheduled without any date being fixed. Based on this, it is true that sports gambling and associated networks have lost huge revenue.
