Never hold altcoins for long term. Look at their charts against BTC, they are all down historically. This means Bitcoin outperforms them. So, you are taking a larger risk and losing potential profits at the same time. Only invest in alts for short term, try to catch the start of the hype and sell and its peak. Alts have no long-term potential because they are always failing to fully deliver on their promises, and then some new one takes the spot.
