If it was red then you have connection problem that's why you can't able to see your current balance.
Since you mention that you currently using older version how did you download this Electrum ad when did you download it?

If you downloaded it this year there's a possibility that you downloaded it somewhere because Electrum 3.0.1 is no longer available on this page https://electrum.org/#download
Unless if you downloaded it from this link https://download.electrum.org/

Anyway, like the other said upgrading it to the latest version can solve this problem but if you still get red circle it means the problem is your internet or DNS that blocks your electrum from connecting online. If that's the case changing your DNS might solve your issue.
