My journey and experience in the cryptocurrency space started early 2016 when I first hard about bitcoin and some time late 2016 I decided to give it a try, as an early adaptor I invested some couple of dollars in bitcoin.
You are active since 2016 and I am sure that you are no longer a newbie here. I am also one of the ones that followed the hype of the crypto world in 2017. Where there are so many successful ICO at that time before dumping al the time until now. 
Btw, ICO is now no longer trusted and people will leave it. IEO is still ongoing and probably will be left soon.
'Now, Defi is kind of Hype and many people and newcomers are here for Defi. They may have gained very high profits at that time. but, as the hype in 2017, we do not know the exact time of this hype will end, or it will be different from previous hype. let's see the flow.
But, I do agree with you that never getting in the hype too much. Choosing coins in the market is also important to consider whether the coins are in hype or not. I personally have learned from the previous hype and not a concern about the hype coins again right now.
