The virus mutated in the mink and spread back to humans potentially more lethal.  This was always an inherent risk with mass-scale farming and here we are staring down a potential doomsday scenario.

The order to cull them should be accompanied with a ban on all mink farming.  Unlike food, no one ever needs mink.
