What would be the value of this cryptocurrency if Satoshi just gave it for free to everyone, and how would you ensure security of blockchain if no one would mine it? Crucial  part of Bitcoin is POW component, and why would anyone do that if everyone got BTC for free? One day BTC fees might be enough to sustain the miners, but we are far away from that scenario. With that being said, everyone is free to own BTC (in some jurisdictions its more complicated than in others).

Bitcoin gives you freedom not to rely on banks and governments and 3rd parties in general as no one can freeze your funds (if you are smart enough to keep BTC in your own wallet and not on exchanges) as you are your own bank.
