This is the first time a huge project implements PoS (other projects with PoS were very small). This is amazing and it will open many possibilities, as we will be able to test PoS in large scale and see how the network economy will respond. Also, it will be good to see the (de)centralization effects. Also possible security side effects.
However, as you said, the fees are still pretty high as the TPS remains the same. This is why the price and fees are stuck.
