Well, it all depends on how you view it and level of expertise also matters in all of these things. As for me, altcoin is safe for investment, just know the in and out of the project you are buying into their token/coin.
I guess you don't understand that the pitfall in term of investment in newly/startup project is high and knowing the in and out of the project doesn't mean the project will be successful or the project teams won't scam their investors because are done in different ways.
You should ask yourself questions like: What problem(s) does this project solve? Is it potential at all?

It good to make a good research about the project before investing in it but it better to invest in a project that's doing well in the market for years or already listed a new project that's doing well after exchange trading competition.
