But why this?

If it would be done different, if the supply would be infinite, it could make Bitcoin worth (much) less. Just look, for example, to Dogecoin, where the supply is not limited.
If the supply is not limited the coin can be (in theory!) very good as a mean of exchange, but awful as store of value.
I guess that Bitcoin was designed to do both, to keep it appealing. And it became so appealing as store of value it can be (sometimes?) troublesome to use it as a mean of exchange.
