The important component of Ethereum network - decentralized storage solution : Swarm was released. This is about what you talked.
Today, I have to say this post is a really good idea in 2013 with much forward-looking at that time.
The biggest problem with Swarm and other decentralized/distributed storage (such as Storj and Sia) are they're tied to specific cryptocurrency and limiting who can use them.
Another protocol such as IPFS is more practical and already more popular than Swarm.
It's not about tech issue, it's about business , they can decoupled with some specific underlay network on day as needed actually, on the other hand, filecoin is the native currency for IPFS network, this is to some degree the same with Swarm, Storj and Sia. Filecoin intends to build and use its own blockchain, I cannot say whether this would be more competitive or not without a mature onchain economy like ethereum. Also the ecosystem need to be diversified without a single solution like what it is currently.
