Your intentions night be good, but this is not a good idea, imo. Giving merits to newies solely on their punctuality or response on a thread could breed spammers and give them the much needed one merit to allow them rank up.

You should have a criteria which you would use to separate well meaning newbies from spammers or you can just quickly browse around the forum and find good posts to merit
