"Running away with the funds", in my world entails that I have received them to my possession. This, however, never was the case. Is it possible to commit theft without gain?

It's a whole lot more than that. There were many others ripped off too.

Anyway, the guy is apparently dead (unless it is one of those fake "deaths" people heavily in debt occasionally try to pull off, and I have no evidence of that), so maybe it's time to put this to rest.
