The crypto market has entered a mature phase and now the top position means that the altcoin has achieved some success and is not a dummy. Therefore, investing in top altcoins with the general growth of the market is the most reliable way to make money. Obviously, some small altcoins will grow many times more, but you will most likely have to sell them after the rise (as they will still remain a risky asset), while the top altcoins will be good even in a stagnant/falling market.
