The problem with defeating the establishment, at least in the west, is that anyone who gets anywhere in challenging them ends up being co-opted and becoming part of them.

The bitcoin early adopters, at least the ones who didn't lose their wallet keys, are now extremely wealthy.  The government caters to the very wealthy because they have lobbyists, and now they realize that if they can get some government regulation, a government stamp of approval they'll be able to get the masses, who actually trust the government when it comes to things like money to adopt.
