hey folks, i'm new in crypto and want learn more about this. As BTC has already pump a lot i'm trying to find a new gem with a low marketcap which can have a decent run in the following years. I can read sometimes some people picked some coins and did a lot of profit, and i was wondering how they can do to detect a coin with a lot of potentiel. I started to search but to be honest i don't know where to start. I was wondering if some people could share their experiences and how to be able to detect a coin 
I have been in the same situation as you during 2019 and learned the hard way to do research properly before investing.
Currently, I like truly decentralized projects, with no pre-sales, ico or private companies behind that try to profit from the sale (as is 95% of the projects in circulation). This is because I believe that in the long run they will be the only ones to survive, along with bitcoin.
The best coins with these characteristics are therefore in my opinion litecoin, monero, even polkadot although it has a foundation behind it is relatively decentralized.
Speaking of gems, however, I found a really interesting project called DERO, anonymous team and development of a totally new protocol from 0 are the things that intrigued me. It's a bit like eth + nano + monero through totally anonymous transactions and the ability to create smart contracts, with a very scalable DAG.
