For me wallet v0.8.7.5-g355d8bc-beta takes "forever" to get a fresh copy of the blockchain.
After restarting it, I now have 8 network connections and in 24 hours received 2372151 blocks.

0.8-core client can choose to set up 1 node for fast synchronization
But do not open the UPNP of the network device, otherwise it will be very slow
