Even if you created a new Bitcoin Core wallet, you don't need to download the blockchain again. Alternatively, you could use a lightweight client (electrum) that stores no blockchain data. Whatever you decide to do, the forked coins should be safe if you only move the BTC from address 1 to address 2; doing nothing with the private keys/seed in between
