Why pay such a high fee just to save a message on the blockchain?

Bitcoin addresses can be made as desired. If you're interested in getting one, I think @LoyceV has a special thread about it. You can also make transaction with a wallet and your transaction will be stored on the blockchain.

It wasn't encrypted. If you can see the message on the block explorer, then it isn't encrypted. It's encoded with Op_return as a flag so it'll be valid.
