I don't know if mining still profitable for small time miners but for what difficulty we have and to many miners sell their rigs well that indicates that is not a good business to be made. But if he can able to spend a lot of money to risk on mining well maybe he should give it a try.
Still got no experience with it but I think it's worth it if you have cheap electricity or you'll also invest in solar panels. Mining is still profitable if you've got a lot of miners but if you're just mining with 1-3 equipment, you're just wasting it. But there is the strategy that they're mining for some other altcoins and just keeping it while sustaining themselves with the electricity. It is like mine and collect now and then pay electricity with other sources they have.
