Ive noticed such thing. If GPU is in main MB slot ( I mean 16x speed ) it hashes at 19-20 Mhs ( 389-390 epoch) , if GPU is on riser in the same main slot ( but of kz its 1x speed) it hashes 15-16 max.
So PCIex speed is very important IMHO.

It is they key in Zombie Mode you are right
... I just wanted post the same thing. Connect all of your 4GB cards directly to the motherboard, if possible of course. Do not use risers. I am still getting about 21.5 MH/S per card that way.
You will probably continue with nice hashrate 4 more EPOCHs...
