There is a hard fork for the SIA coin and it is expected to be on February 03, just few days from now. That's the main reason for this pump and i hope it will not dump after the event as SIA team is actively building up some nice projects.
having SIA in old wallet is safe?

Your coins will not be lost even if you did not upgrade the wallet. However in order to transfer the coins you will eventually have to upgrade the wallet.
