The synchronization went indeed very fast in the first years. In an hour that was done. BUt now i am at the end of 2016 and it stays going slowly.
That's about the time that bitcoin blocks started filling up with transactions... the earlier blocks in the first few years were pretty much empty, so there was not as much data that needed to be verified.
Now that blocks are pretty consistently "full", there is a lot more data that needs to be verified... consequently, the verification appears to "slow down"... it's not, it's still verifying data at the same rate... it's just there is more of it

It should indeed be better to take wallet lik Electrum. I thought Bicoin Core was the safest.
Again, it depends why you're wanting to use Bitcoin Core... if you can wait to get it synced... and you can
keep the node synced, then it's a good choice. However, if your machine is going to be offline a lot, and you're going to go days/weeks without syncing it... you're going to face this problem on an ongoing basis.
In which case, you'd likely be better off moving to an SPV wallet like Electrum or Wasabi etc
