Why do companies do things like this? 
The only explanation I can think of is "vendor lock in"... as there is simply no good reason for:
1. Using a custom derivation path
2. Not telling anyone what that custom derivation path is
That 12 word seed is effectively useless as a recovery tool without Abra... and what happens when they cease to exist?
