I've heard Theymos refer to Lauda as "he" before, and Theymos probably knows what gender Lauda is.
There are quite a number of languages where genre is "neutral" in normal talk - there's no different word for he and she - first one coming into my mind being Hungarian.
So what you're telling makes me think that Theymos' mother tongue could be one of those, instead of thinking he's Lauda.
