The word came from "Esteem" as far as I can remember. It was supposed to be a blogging platform which would reward the bloggers to post content and depending on how much upvotes the stuff accumulated, they would be getting a payout. It ended up being a circle jerk for some users who promoted their content with paid higher ups and so on. This type of a blogging site could have been much bigger but they had to go towards to nepotistic type favoritism gradually.

Never heard of "Steen" But keeping to your post, Steem is an Altcoin along with SBD and some others which you need to cash out stuff and so on.
