How does it work? What connections does it have with pancakeswap

It doesn't have any connection to the CMC but when you are ethereum user and you can connect to the BSC at the same time. Pancakeswap and UNIswap were swap protocol that already built in the different blockchain.
Both uni and pancake have the same mechanism because pancake was being created from uniswap. I call pancake as a fork from uniswap.
