Success is not always about money. But I agree that money can show your level to someone who is not aware of your topic. For example, gambling. I've been playing for months at bonuscasinoisland. But no one asked what effort it took me to learn to play in a balanced manner. Everyone is interested in how much I won yesterday or how much I won in general. Perhaps money is a universal measure. (but sometimes it hurts)
