So Wilson more accurately could be construed as having phase 2 only and the thought to finally kill his wife was the trigger to make him outright targeted. 'put it together John!'. What the director and Jackson are doing here is blurring the line between who was going to kill who; with Jackson ultimately accusing the wife. Your suppose to make the inverse connection, especially when Jackson is repeatedly asking Wilson why he knocked on his door. This concept is held in the exact same capacity as (the clip for) A Serious Man (2009) where he's caught making the wrong decision and immediately gets the call from his doctor. Remember these movies still have a normal plot to maintain, they are not going to just roll out the red carpet for you; you have to '...put it together'."
