The use of Bitcoin, the creation of assets, the processing of transactions, and the assurance of security surrounding Bitcoin are all tied to the mining process that deliberately consumes energy. Energy is used as a "proof of work", and its sum ensures that Bitcoin's transaction ledger cannot be changed. This is critical to Bitcoin's monetary policy certainty and other key attributes. The Bitcoin network has hundreds of billions of dollars in market value and billions of dollars in settlement funds every day. Obviously, there is a huge demand for the services provided by Bitcoin, and Bitcoin mining needs to consume energy to support these services. This energy consumption is not wasted; the market clearly requires it.
