You can expand it top 20 or 30, once you knew what you're looking for in a project. But for long-term, I think you should always consider if they will still be in the market years from now and people have the reasons why they will utilize the coin. Without strong use case, would be hard for the coin to survive.
if for the long term it is better to choose a coin whose function and development continues. BTC, ETH, BNB, are the best choices in my opinion, but please note that long-term investing requires patience. a quality project and for the long term usually takes time to achieve the best price, you need to understand the roadmap and important events from the development of the project.
I like coins like that more than big coins because of the hype, it goes up fast but goes down and then it's worthless
