Try to send a a wire from us to japan. How long will it take? How much will it cost? Is it permissionless?
How many wires do you send to japan on average? And how many millions are those ?

This whole thing risk turning bitcoin into remitcoin! Banking has evolved, the same bank transfers are instant and free, I pay 0.5E for national bank transfers that happen in an hour, then we have SEPA for the EU. Even WU now offers 5 min pick-up deliveries.
Bitcoin with the main chain can't compete with that and will never be able to do so, the LN is the solution or on-chain settlement bitcoin is slow, that's a fact, comparing it to the lowest possible bank transaction out there makes no sense. You want speed, you use LN, you want huge transfers with millions you use the main chain, but ...seems like even with the lowest fees this year people are really not that keen on sending bitcoins around.
Dogecoin and it's likes (Eth) are better suited for the job
Have you actually tried to do a transaction on those chains lately?
