I particularly don't understand why they are doing these Olympic games even with this new variant, why didn't they postpone it to a date when at least 60% of the population was vaccinated and the virus was under control?
I don't agree. They already postponed it once. There is no point in postponing it further, since the next edition is supposed to take place in 2024. Olympics is the largest sporting event in the globe and it happens only once every four years. If it is postponed or cancelled, tens of thousands of athletes may never get a chance to compete at this level again (for many of the athletes, the peak performance lasts only for 4-5 years). The risk is there, but it is very low. All the athletes and the remaining members of the staff are vaccinated with two doses of the Pfizer vaccine. On top of that, they are not allowing any spectators. Any chance of someone getting infected with COVID at the venue is very low.
