If living in an area that gets cold during the winter an Avalon A841 works great as a space heater. Throttled down to 9THs and fan limited to 40% it's nice and quiet while pulling about 750w.
...
This is the best bet - Canaan Avalon A8 - rather than the S9.
Way more reliable, and uses original firmware, you don't have to work out how to hack in an after market firmware that can also charge you 2%
Getting an old, working, not overclocked and due to die soon, S9 is a crapshoot.
I run an A851 a couple of meters behind me (it's winter now) 24/7 as a heater - it's low pitch quiet enough 9TH/s
Thanks for the tips. What do you do in the summer months?
Move it to my computer room and point it out the wire screen door to get rid of a lot of the heat generated.
That starts around the middle of spring until it gets cooler in autumn.
(yes I've been doing this for a number of years - before the A851 had the LowPower setting, I used a slower A741)
Last summer I only had to turn it off about 3 times during the whole summer when the room got over 40C
Though, that was to avoid the servers getting too hot, and I ran the air-con in the room with all doors closed.
Having a miner generate heat in there at the same time was obviously not 'optimal' on those days
