Monta Ellis was a great player.  I remember hoping that my Chicago Bulls were going to sign him when there was a lot of chatter about him being moved to a new team.  He was a great shooter.  By signing this player, that does not put the Mavs in a position to have their "reputation" at risk. The Mavs have had plenty of players with their own issues and there is technically nothing wrong with someone having had a drug problem.
I'm not questioning his skills or how great a player he was. He's guilty of violating the league's anti-drug rules and was suspended. Will they sign that type of player? What if NBA fans found out his history and attacked the team? That's what I was going after when I said "reputation"
Wow. I didn't know that happened. I tried to dig and I saw it. It was him and Reggie Bullock that was tested positive 3 times for marijuana.
Bullock though didn't stop and continued his career after the suspension. But why did Ellis really stopped?
The last news was a buyout from the Pacers because of injuries and he is still receiving that buyout money until 2021-2022 with $2.4M. I think he knows he will need a job after that that's why his name comes out again.
I don't think people will attack him for the marijuana case, it's not the worst drug out there. It will be his injuries, health, and age that will be questioned before a team signs him up.
