Today, 20th October, 2021 happens to be the one year memorial of the saddest evening in Nigeria's history in recent times. On this day, armless and peaceful protesters were massacred whilst holding the national flag and singing the national anthem. How can one forget the sight? This event took place at Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos State, Nigeria. The blood and tears of helpless patriotic Nigerians who did nothing but were asking the government to just end police brutality and give its citizens good governance. Prior to on the  20th of October night, the protest has been the most peaceful Nigeria have experienced.
At noon that day, the government declared a nationwide curfew starting from 4pm knowing fully well protesters won't be able to get back to their various places. Hence, they will end up been arrested. So, the smartest thing to do was for all protesters to stay together at the venue till morning before leaving for their homes. Then again, the government extended the curfew time to 7pm and at this time it was already past 4pm. It's as good as not going home too. So, the protesters stayed put - all calm & sitting on the floor. Then, someone raised an alarm that some CCTV around the Toll gate are been removed & the LED light switched off.
Immediately, the light went off there arrive the military men shooting at these armless protesters. Some of the protesters quickly went on live to let the world know what is happening. Indeed, Nigeria & the rest of the world saw what did happen.  The crazy part is the government keep denying and releasing conflicting statements each time they were put on the spot. They started gaslighting victims of the massacre.
The best shot to the feeling that something was going to be done was when CNN did a documentary about the incident. At a moment, Nigerians thought the world listened, saw and is coming to their rescue. At last, justice will be served but no! That is not the reality. After 365 days, nothing has changed. No justice served whatsoever. "The world is watching" cliche is a very big lie. The world isn't coming to Nigerians aid. Nigerians themselves have to get up and fight for themselves, nobody... Absolutely no one is coming to deliver them not when they don't have anything to gain from the quest. It's one year memorial today and it has dawned on most Nigerians and other well meaning Africans that we are alone in this struggle against bad governance and no one is coming for us.
