Well history is littered with successes that were bonkers ideas. From an engineering perspective, the person that build the Florida Keys Overseas Railroad was thought to be certifiably insane but the task was accomplished. I suppose it did get partially destroyed during a very strong and almost unprecedented hurricane but the point still stands.
