The blockchain growth is rather steep at the moment yeah, we're working out a few options to slow down the growth of the blockchain to make it more viable for new users to get started. I can also confirm that we are working on a web wallet, advantage of that would be that you wont have to download the blockchain.

Once peseta is implemented this would mean that you are mining 3 coins at the same time!
