both of them are popular tho cmc is a little bit more popular than gecko but imo gecko is more accurate when it comes to coins data so many people are using it therfor ,
you can go with coingecko first and then maybe consider listing in cmc later on .
listing on these top sites may add impression to your coins but your right that it can also depend on other factors such as the usefulness or the purpose of the coin and so on ..

Coingecko isnt really too far off when it comes to popularity but it cant really be denied that Coinmarketcap does have that kind of popularity and recognition as a tracking website in overall market.Dont know if its precise but thats what i do tend to observe.
I dont know on what you do say about giving out some big impact because i dont see any relevance for a project to get listed and take out advantage
whenever they do get listed out in one of these tracking sites.
This is a matter of choice according to your preference because both could function out well on whar you are suposed or intendly to do.
