We may have never seen Satoshi Nakamoto talked about "moon" or engaged in any price speculation but I wouldn't say BTC was zero hype in the early days. I'm pretty sure there's a small group talking about price increase after a few years.

The main difference between then and now is even the devs today would hype their own projects and spends lots of money on advertising.
