I truly believe this! Metaverse is an illusion. Big tech companies are tricking the common people to believe into this illusion so that they can sell you imaginary products in the name of NFT. There is nothing real about it! You are entering into a world that doesn't exist. You are buying something that can't be touched or felt. You are buying a parcel of land where you can't construct your house. Till date, I didn't find an use-case for metaverse and failed to understand how it will do any good to the humankind!

I really hope some proper use case will come up with time and development of metaverse as it is in a very nascent stage at this moment. But I am quite skeptical about it! It may die a painful death as well.

I'm not as skeptical about the future of the Metaverse. As you said, this technology is still in its infancy, so it will certainly evolve.

Of course, these alternate worlds are not real, they exist as the Matrix. But for now, a virtual reality headset provides the most authentic 3D experience. Moreover, this is a boundless space for advertizing the products that exist in the real world. If people join some VR project with their own avatars, the transnational companies will also come to these dimensions to promote their food, hardware, software and other services. It depends on how many individuals are involved in the Metaverse projects that use non-fungible tokens as in-game currency.

In general, I like the concept of Metaverse. Yes, billions of dollars have already flown into this new technology, but you need to choose a reliable project to invest in.
