I see not big differences between both of methods, But staking means you have to transfer your coins for any staking platform or third party so it might be risky because you have no control with your money. On the other hand in case of Hodl you can buy a coin and if you want to store it for short term or long term, And can withdraw anytime but for staking you have to wait for a certain time as like one weeks or 12 weeks.
